Pioneer Broadband Partners with Mi'kmaq Nation to Expand Tribal Broadband Access in Aroostook County
We're excited to announce a multi-year agreement between Pioneer Broadband and the Mi'kmaq Nation to deliver high-speed fiber-optic internet to tribal homes, government buildings, and community facilities throughout Aroostook County, Maine.
This landmark collaboration represents a major stride in improving digital access for rural and Indigenous communities in Maine.
"This is more than a service contract—it's a commitment to community," said Tim McAfee, CEO of Pioneer Broadband.
Fiber-to-the-Premises Technology
As part of the agreement, Pioneer will deploy fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology capable of delivering symmetrical gigabit-speed service. The partnership includes flexible billing options and volume-friendly service terms, ensuring that the Mi'kmaq Nation can scale access as needed.
Community Impact
Chief Sheila McCormack highlighted the importance of this partnership for her community:
"I would like to thank Fred Corey for providing the opportunity for our tribal community with internet services. Also, a huge thank you to Pioneer Broadband for making this opportunity happen and giving our community the benefit by partnering with the Mi'kmaq Nation."
Looking Ahead
The project is expected to connect more than 150 tribal homes in its first year, with provisions for network growth in the years ahead.
This collaboration builds on Pioneer Broadband's commitment to serving underserved communities and aligns with ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide in Maine and beyond.
